Holy Shit, He Took it From Independence Day

Harold Camping, the man responsible for yesterday’s false doomsday prophecy, is a genius. However, it’s questionable whether he’s actually aware of his cunning; it’s possible his awareness of what he actually did is latent, obscured by his religious zealousness. According to the Associated Press, Camping spent millions on his advertisement campaign, resulting in 5,000 billboards and numerous RV’s plastered with doomsday propaganda. While everybody’s castigating Camping for his inane prediction nobody is really asking why he did it or even analyzing what he accomplished. For a man who owns a large Christian radio network, syndicated in every American state, this is the best public relations move ever. Like the advertisements for Independence Day, Camping’s apocalyptic blunder got everybody talking – a difficult feat amidst a sea of information and products.

My September 11th Post: Films Featuring 9/11 Allusions

Last week I was watching a copy of Terminator 2: Judgment Day I picked up on Blu-Ray (it looks great) and noticed this:

About a month or so ago when I watched Independence Day (a mistake I’ll never make again) I noticed the countdown clock on Jeff Goldblum’s computer also said 9:11. Now I’m not a conspiracy theory nut but I’ve noticed a great deal of September 11th imagery in films released prior to the attacks. Naturally, the numbers “9-1-1” have connotations in American society extending beyond these events from almost a decade ago (it’s the number we call in an emergency, which I’m assuming everybody knows) but I can’t help feeling those looking for surreptitious government plots are interesting, even if I don’t believe them. I’m sorry but I don’t believe in secret societies the same way some of these people online do and just because the internet is a free forum (for now) doesn’t mean your ideas hold any water. However, being the sick bastard I am sometimes, here are some of my favorite images from pre-9/11 films featuring allusions to September 11th.

Independence Day

So let’s talk about Independence Day, ID4, or, as I like to call it: that piece of shit movie from the ‘90s that used alien invasion to make Americans patriotic for a brief moment. Last week I had band practice at my house and, as usual, our guitarist was late. It’s not that he’s a bad person but he’s never punctual. Our singer/screamer Brett was on time and we ended up watching part of Independence Day, laughing at the absurdity and stupidity of this film – it’s obviously a film made for addlepated, overtly patriotic Americans who think nationalism still matters when faced with beings from another planet.
