Abortions For All (not a demand, but a line from the now tragically horrid series The Simpsons) is a blog about film and television. The essays on this site explore visual media, helping me improve my writing skills; it’s also an attempt for faceless praise from the internet masses. Thanks for reading.

  1. Hey Manny, it’s Dan from the reflection pond area. I read a few of your reviews…pretty damn interesting, I like what I read, it’s insightful and gives credit where it’s due.

I’ll just be kicking around campus, busying myself in lieu of the free time classes would have taken. If you’d like to chill or grab a coffee just send me a text, 9417802843. Not to mention if you’re interested in a nice smoke-out, that can be accomplished as well.

    See you around,

  2. hey there,

i’m an undergrad working on a term paper about verhoeven and saw that you did your thesis on him. i’m fairly curious what your thoughts are, especially since it seems like there has been so little written on him. or perhaps just your bibliography is? don’t worry, i’m not interested in plagiarizing. would love to have a more in-depth conversation on this, let me know if you’d be into that.

    • I found most of my information via JSTOR, Project MUSE, and Google Scholar (where I found a litany of articles which I tracked down through other databases). There are a few books out there on Verhoeven but some of them are out of print. However, I found most of them through Amazon for a few dollars each. Also, the audio commentaries on the DVD’s are a rich source of information, especially since it comes straight from the man himself. Just beware the Total Recall audio commentary where Arnold gives you a play by play of the film – it’s really dull and I think he doesn’t understand the concept of an audio commentary.

The best advice I can give is to think about Verhoeven’s perspective. He’s a Dutch director who made films in his native land (and a television series with Rutger Hauer in the late ’60s) for years before coming to America and making Robocop. I did some research into the Dutch and The Netherlands which really gave me a great perspective on how Verhoeven approaches America. I also went to Amsterdam and experienced Dutch culture for a little over a week and it really helped my thesis immensely. I wouldn’t recommend that unless you have the time and money (I had a connection for a cheap ticket).

Finally I would suggest watching some of Verhoeven’s Dutch films. Spetters should still be streaming on Netflix. His other Dutch films are out of print currently but I’m sure you can find them online easily. Check out Soldiers of Orange, which received a Best Foreign Film Oscar nod. The sexual promiscuity in many of his Dutch films is vastly different than his science fiction films in America – and even more graphic than Showgirls or Basic Instinct – and should give you a good idea of what Verhoeven was up against when he arrived stateside.

I’m pretty sure my thesis is available through the University of Central Florida online library. I haven’t checked recently but they digitally publish them regularly. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask. I’m not sure what angle you’re approaching the material from so outside of this I’m not sure what else to tell you. Nonetheless, Verhoeven’s films are deeper than they’re given credit for and it’s a shame there isn’t a larger body of academic work on him yet. Hopefully that’ll change one day. =)

      Take care.

  3. I was doing a google search for images from Death Wish 3 (because, obviously, people need pictures of The Giggler) and saw the name of your blog and just laughed and laughed and laughed.

Even though I support the candidate who will provide abortions for some, miniature American flags for others!

    • Thanks Byronic Man. I too endorse miniature American flags for others.

In addition, The Giggler is fantastic but Manny Frakes’ face in his final scene is probably the best glamor shot in the entire film, beating out the dozen or so of Bronson.

  4. the pain i feel to read the “abortions for all” title makes me struggle to support your other opinions when there are so many freely given on the vast world of the internet.

  5. Oh, calm down Regan. It’s from The Simpsons. Also, that pain means you might want to see a doctor.
